About Monday night in Toronto, the Hockey Hall of Fame inducted its newest class, signaling that it’s time to start speculating on next year’s immortals.
The Hall did not have a 2021 class due to the COVID-19 epidemic. That means players like Henrik and Daniel Sedin will be considered for the Class of 2022, further complicating matters for next year’s eligible newcomers and the 18-member selection committee.
Here is our current ranking of Class of 2022 qualified player hopefuls. Keep in mind that the class may only include four male and two female awardees for players:
Caroline Ouellette is the number one forward (first year)
The only clear certainty for the 2022 Hockey Hall of Fame Class. The forward is one of only five athletes in history to win a gold medal in four consecutive Winter Olympics, guiding the Canadian women to victory in 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014, as well as Olympic silver in 1998. In the IIHF women’s world championships, she earned six gold medals. In 97 games at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Ouellette averaged 2.36 points per game.
She also won the Clarkson Cup in 2009 with the Montreal Stars, making her one of just three players in history to win the Cup, Olympic gold, and World Championship gold. Hayley Wickenheiser and Jayna Hefford are the other two. You can probably figure out where they’re now enshrined.

The easiest way out would have been to tie the Sedins for second place overall. However, it is undeniable that Henrik is the superior Sedin. Despite having the same career points-per-game average, he had more (1,070). (0.80). He was the more capable defender of the two. When Daniel Sedin was restricted to 63 games due to injury, he earned the Hart Trophy as league MVP for a 112-point season in 2009-10.
During his 17-year NHL career, Henrik ranked third in scoring among centers, behind only Joe Thornton and Sidney Crosby, both of whom would be Hall of Famers today if they were eligible. The most amusing scenario for next year’s Hall of Fame class would be for former Canucks GM Brian Burke to propose Henrik Sedin, while no one nominates Daniel Sedin, and only one of the Sedin twins gets in on the first vote. 3. Right winger Daniel Sedin (first year)
If Henrik Sedin is a Hall of Famer, Daniel Sedin is almost certainly one as well. In 1,306 games, the winger scored 1,041 points. He was the goal-scorer for this extraordinary duo, despite the fact that his 393 goals rated him fourth among left flanks throughout his career, behind only fellow first-time eligible player Rick Nash. Daniel earned the scoring championship and the Pearson Award as the NHLPA player of the year in 2010-11, although he finished second in the MVP vote behind Corey Perry.
The Sedins were such a unique tandem — not just in hockey history, but also in pro sports history — that they deserved to be honored together. Even though Henrik Sedin previously said that “we’d have different [ones], for sure,” they should be on the same plaque.
4. Right winger Alex Mogilny (13th year)
As Mogilny’s candidacy stays on the ballot for much longer than his illustrious career should have allowed, support for him continues to grow.
He ranks 54th all-time in goals (473), 53rd in adjusted goals, and 36th in average goals per game (0.478). He played the most of his career in the defensive-trap period, averaging 1.04 points per game, good for 42nd all-time. As the first Soviet defection to the NHL, Mogilny was a Triple Gold Club member and an essential part of hockey history.
Luongo has the numbers to make the Hall of Fame: 1,044 games played, which is second all-time; 489 wins, which is fourth all-time despite playing on significantly less successful teams than Martin Brodeur (691), Patrick Roy (551), and Marc-Andre Fleury (495) ahead of him; and a.919 career save percentage and 77 shutouts, which are both ninth all-time. He was a part of two IIHF world championship teams and captained Canada to Olympic gold in 2010.
The only thing he lacks is a Vezina Trophy, despite being a three-time contender. He came closest to winning in 2006-07, finishing second behind Brodeur (and second for MVP honors to Sidney Crosby). A popular star player who might be a good Canucks-centric complement to the Sedins in this class. However, only six goalies have been inducted into the Hall of Fame since 2003; is Luongo a first-ballot candidate?

Nicklas Lidstrom had the misfortune of not being Gonchar. From 1994-95 through 2014-15, the Detroit Red Wings Hall of Famer, who is regarded one of the finest defenders in hockey history, is the only defenseman to score more goals (236) and points (985) than Gonchar (220 goals, 811 points).
With the exception of Gary Suter, Gonchar is 17th all-time in career points by a defender, and the people in front of him are all Hall of Famers (14th). He won the Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009 and was a four-time Norris Trophy finalist.
In 2022, the former Senators captain may join the Sedins in a Swedish invasion, or he could work his way closer to being inducted into “The Hall of Very Good.” His 444 goals and 1,157 points rank him 64th and 54th, respectively, in NHL history. In 1995-96, he won the Calder Trophy, and in 2006, he earned Olympic gold with the Sedins, as well as a silver in 2014. However, he was never nominated for another individual award or the Stanley Cup.
Jarome Iginla was inducted into the Hall of Fame for being a fantastic player and even greater advocate for the game. Alfredsson fits the bill as well.
Jennifer Botterill is number eight on the list (eighth year)
Botterill was a member of Team Canada that won Olympic gold in 2002, 2006, and 2010. He also won five IIHF world championships and was named MVP thrice. Her supremacy in the NCAA, though, marked her apart. She scored at least one point in every game she played at Harvard, accumulating 319 points in 113 games. She was the first athlete to win the Patty Kazmaier Award twice as the best female college hockey player in the United States. Botterill also had 155 points in 78 games with the CWHL.
She’s a player who may already be in, and whose profile has risen as a result of her work in the Canadian media. Only two women’s players have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the same year: Cammi Granato and Angela James in the Class of 2010.

Over the course of his 18-year career, Tkachuk scored 538 goals (32nd all-time) and 1,065 points in 1,201 games. He only had one season in which he led the league in goals (1996-97), but he was generally a model of consistency. Tkachuk’s career was steady but unspectacular, with no individual awards or Stanley Cup victories despite capturing World Cup gold in 1996 and Olympic silver in 2002.
But here’s the thing: every player on the goals list ahead of him who is eligible for the Hall of Fame is a Hall of Famer. Theory: Matthew and Brady Tkachuk’s success has kept their father on the immortality radar.
Zetterberg concluded his career with 960 points (337 goals) in 1,082 games. He was a fantastic two-way forward who never won the Selke Trophy and was only nominated once. In 2002-03, he was also second in the Calder. His biggest individual achievement was collecting the Conn Smythe Trophy as part of the Red Wings’ Stanley Cup victory in 2008. This ring gained him membership in the Triple Gold Club, as well as victories in the 2006 Olympics and the 2006 World Championships with Sweden.
One may argue that Pavel Datsyuk, his former teammate, has a better case. It’s also possible to claim that Guy Carbonneau’s induction opened the path for the former Red Wings captain.
Other contenders
Centers Jeremy Roenick, Rod Brind’Amour, and Patrik Elias, winger Theo Fleury, and goalies Curt Joseph and Mike Vernon are among the players currently being considered. Forward Rick Nash, who ranks 71st all-time with 437 goals, is another first-year candidate.
Meghan Duggan, who led Team USA to gold at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, is one intriguing possibility in her first year of eligibility.
Herb Carnegie, a pioneering Black player; Francois Allaire, an inventive goalie coach; and Red Berenson, a former Michigan coach, are among the finalists in the builders category.
