On the fifth day of R. Kelly’s New York trial, a judge heard that the singer allegedly pushed his girlfriends to lie during a CBS interview with Gayle King.
Kelly’s federal trial in Brooklyn on racketeering and sex trafficking charges resumed on Tuesday, with the 54-year-old rejecting the claims.
While the prosecution intends to present evidence that Kelly allegedly mistreated 22 people, the allegations in the indictment are focused on six people.
Jane Doe #5, the second witness to take the stand in Federal District Court in Brooklyn, told jurors that the artist had allegedly sexually assaulted her during their five-year relationship, which started when she was 17 years old.
The accuser, now 23, alleged that the R&B artist had instructed her and another woman on how to defend him during a now-famous 2019 interview with journalist Gayle King.
Kelly, she said, had been lurking in the shadows, coughing in a unique manner so they would know he was listening in, as she told jurors: ‘He did a cough that he normally does so everyone knows he is there.’ ‘Letting us know he was in the same room as us.’

The interview with King aired only a few weeks after he was arrested on sex assault allegations.
The singer’s tantrum, in which he ranted, screamed, and shouted at King while refuting allegations aired in the Lifetime series Surviving R. Kelly, grabbed headlines.
Jane also told jurors that Kelly had instructed her not to watch the show because everything on it was fake and that she needed to change the channel anytime it came on.

Doe, now 23, testified before federal prosecutor Elizabeth Geddes that Kelly instructed her to have non-consensual intercourse with another guy, “Nephew,” whom Kelly said he had been “grooming since he was young.”
Doe said that having sex with Nephew was a punishment for communicating to his other girlfriends about her relationship with Kelly, which was also against the rules.
Kelly’s lawyer, Deveraux Cannick, attempted to throw doubt on Jane’s allegation that Kelly forced her into their first claimed sexual encounter when she was 17, in exchange for helping her develop her own nascent singing career.

Prosecutors will try to prove that the Grammy winner operated a criminal operation in which women and young girls were recruited to participate in sexual behavior with him throughout the trial.
Kelly was initially arrested on sex-related charges in 2002 when a tape was provided to the Chicago Sun-Times purportedly showing him having sex with a 14-year-old girl, but he was acquitted in 2008 after long delays.
The case is being heard in front of an anonymous jury of seven men and five women.

Following many delays, most of which were caused by the pandemic, the trial is now proceeding under coronavirus safeguards, which limit the press and public to overflow courtrooms through video feeds.
In the states of Illinois, New York, and Minnesota, the artist is accused of sexual exploitation of minors, and he has pled not guilty to the allegations.
