Chase Sapphire Preferred and Reserve cards are among the most popular credit cards in the United States. The card offers a lucrative rewards program and generous perks, but there’s a lot of confusion about how to use them.

Chase Sapphire Preferred and Reserve are two new cards that have been released. The card offers a sign up bonus of 50,000 points for the first year.

CNN —

CNN Underscored assesses the total worth of financial goods such as credit cards and bank accounts. If you apply for and are accepted for a card via the LendingTree affiliate network, we may earn a commission, but our reporting is always fair and unbiased.

The hyper-competitive credit card industry isn’t showing any signs of slowing down any time soon.

Chase introduced additional perks and bonus point possibilities for its Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve® credit cards today, with no annual fee hikes. For all new and current cardholders, the modifications will take effect on August 16.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card has the most changes, with three new bonus categories:

  • All travel bought via Chase Ultimate Rewards earns you 5 points for every dollar spent.
  • On certain streaming services, you may get 3 points for every dollar you spend.
  • On online food purchases, you’ll earn 3 points each dollar spent (excluding Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs)

Additionally, the current dining category on the Chase Sapphire Preferred will be increased from 2 to 3 points per dollar, and will continue to cover not just restaurants but also qualifying delivery and takeout services. Purchases made outside of Chase Ultimate Rewards still receive 2 points per dollar.

Here’s why we think the Chase Sapphire Preferred is the best travel credit card for newbies.

A 10% anniversary point bonus is now available on the Chase Sapphire Preferred. Cardholders will get bonus points equivalent to 10% of their total purchases made in the preceding year on their account anniversary (which is every year on the day you originally opened the card). This 10% bonus is based on your total expenditure, not on the number of points you have. You’ll earn 2,500 additional points if you spend $25,000 in a year on all categories, including bonus categories.

Finally, the Chase Sapphire Preferred will get a $50 yearly hotel credit that may be used on any Chase Ultimate Rewards travel booking. Existing Sapphire Preferred cardholders will not get this additional perk until their next account anniversary, while new Sapphire Preferred cardholders may begin using it immediately after obtaining their card.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred’s annual fee stays constant at $95, and the card now offers a record-breaking 100,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first three months of account creation.

The ultra-premium Chase Sapphire Reserve card also gets some new benefits and extra points, but the card’s additional bonus categories are exclusively centered on Chase Ultimate Rewards purchases. The following are the new bonus categories:

  • Chase Dining purchases get 10 points per dollar via Ultimate Rewards.
  • On hotel stays and vehicle rentals booked via Ultimate Rewards, you’ll earn 10 points every dollar spent.
  • On air travel booked via Ultimate Rewards, you will earn 5 points every dollar spent.

Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders will continue to receive 3 points for every dollar spent outside of Chase Ultimate Rewards on dining and travel purchases. The card’s current perks, such as a $300 annual travel credit, free access to Priority Pass is a service that allows you to go ahead lounges, and a $100 application fee credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, remain intact.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve was reviewed by CNN Underscored.

Priority Pass

Priority Pass lounges, such as The Ambassador Transit Lounge in Singapore’s Terminal 2, will continue to be available to Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders.

For Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders, though, two additional future perks are in the works. The issuer previously stated its plan to establish its own airport lounge network, and today it disclosed the first three lounge locations would be at LaGuardia Airport in New York, Boston Logan International Airport in Boston, and Hong Kong International Airport in Hong Kong.

This group of lounges, dubbed the “Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club,” will be open to Chase Sapphire Reserve and Priority Pass cardholders and will offer food, drink, art, entertainment, and wellness experiences. Opening dates and more lounge information, as well as new sites at other major airports, will be revealed when they become available.

Finally, Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders will get access to “Reserved by Sapphire” later this year, which will give them first dibs on reservations at renowned restaurants throughout the nation. Canlis in Seattle, Washington; Redbird in Los Angeles, California; Reverence in New York, New York; and One Off Hospitality in Chicago, Illinois are some of the issuer’s examples.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve’s annual fee will remain at $550, and new applicants may earn 60,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first three months after establishing an account.

Because the annual fees for the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire Reserve remain unchanged, these new perks and bonus categories offer only benefits. When compared to American Express’s recent redesign of The Platinum Card®, which included many additional credits but also came with a substantial annual fee hike, this is notable.

Because the Sapphire Reserve requires booking travel exclusively through Chase Ultimate Rewards to earn bonus points, the Sapphire Preferred’s new bonus categories — and increased dining bonus multiplier — are likely to be more valuable to many people than the Sapphire Reserve’s new Ultimate Rewards-based categories. The forthcoming Chase Sapphire Lounge network, on the other hand, will not be available with a Sapphire Preferred card, so your choice for these expansions may be determined by how important private lounge access is to you.

If you don’t already have one of these cards and are considering it, the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire Reserve are both on CNN Underscored’s list of the top travel credit cards for 2021. The current 100,000-point offer on the Chase Sapphire Preferred is particularly attractive – it’s worth at least $1,250 in travel, giving it a compelling incentive to apply for the card right now.
