FuboTV is a sports-centric streaming service that offers subscribers access to live and on-demand sports content. The company has announced the launch of regional Sports Fee, which will be charged in select regions for some channels.
The regional sports fee lawsuit is a class action lawsuit that was filed against fuboTV. This lawsuit claims that the company has been misleading its customers by advertising free streaming of local sporting events.
A regional sports fee is charged by fuboTV, which raises the price of its monthly subscriptions. The RSN charge, however, does not impact all fuboTV customers since it is location-based. Starting with why there is a regional sports network charge in the first place, here’s a summary of how much the cost is, whose subscribers are impacted, and other facts customers should be aware of.
RSNs have recently grown in importance as a concern for live TV streaming providers. These providers either failed to reach an agreement with network owners or had to raise rates to cover their own rising expenses. Hulu Live TV, for example, dropped a number of Fox RSNs shortly after YouTube TV did. While several of the same RSNs were deleted by fuboTV in early 2020, after Sling TV’s decision in 2019.
AT&T TV, on the other hand, continues to provide access to a large number of RSNs, although the cost of its plans has been steadily rising. The lowest package for new customers increased from $55 to $69.99 per month when AT&T TV Now joined with AT&T TV. Even at that fee, however, customers do not have access to RSNs. Instead, anybody who wants to watch RSNs on AT&T TV would have to pay a monthly fee of at least $84.99. That’s more expensive than a subscription to Hulu Live TV, Sling TV, or YouTube TV, as well as fuboTV’s lowest package, which includes certain regional sports.
With fuboTV’s emphasis on sports, losing access to any more RSNs may be an issue. As a result, it’s reasonable that the business has instituted an RSN charge to compensate expenses rather than just eliminating them. More significantly, fuboTV has been extremely open about the charge and only uses it when it is absolutely necessary. However, due to the way fuboTV has structured their RSN charge, there may be some ambiguity as to who is and isn’t impacted.
A $5 RSN fee is charged by fuboTV.
The regional sports charge on fuboTV is an extra $5 per month on top of your current subscription. As a result, the precise amount paid by customers will be determined by their existing plan. Because fuboTV does not charge this cost everywhere, a subscriber’s location will decide whether or not they must pay the RSN fee.
In the following regions, fuboTV charges an RSN fee:
- New York City/Buffalo/Rochester (and surrounding areas)
- Houston, Texas (TX) (and surrounding areas)
- New England is located in the United States.
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (and surrounding areas)
The charge was initially implemented by fuboTV in August of 2020. It only impacted Houston customers at the time. The above-mentioned sites have since been added to the list, with the most recent increase taking effect on March 11, 2021.
Other fuboTV customers are unaffected by the RSN charge, which is mostly owing to the fact that these other regions do not get RSNs to begin with. However, this does not rule out the possibility that they may be impacted in the future. If fuboTV adds RSNs later, for example, it’s conceivable that customers in those regions may be charged the same regional sports price.
Fees for fuboTV RSN are also available.
Aside from the fact that customers in some regions must pay an extra fee each month, there are a few other issues worth mentioning. The first is that there is no way to avoid paying the charge. If a subscriber lives in one of the affected regions, the cost is included in their monthly payment regardless of whether they desire access to their local RSNs. Second, there is just one charge. If a subscriber resides in an area where they get RSNs from two impacted regions, for example, they will only be charged one $5 cost.
Another thing to keep in mind is that if a customer moves from an unaffected region to one where the RSN charge is in effect, their membership will be subject to the higher monthly rate. This won’t apply if you’re only visiting another region, but it will if you’re moving and need to change your billing and home address.
The inverse is also true. Those relocating from an impacted region to an area where the RSN charge is not presently in place can anticipate a $5 reduction in their monthly membership price.
Fees for fuboTV RSN
In certain regions, fuboTV customers have access to regional sports networks, and many of them are charged an extra $5 per month as an RSN fee. Whether or not a fuboTV customer is required to pay the charge is determined on their location and the RSNs to which they have access.
The RSN charge is a single fee, and there is no way to opt out. As a result, the number of RSNs a subscriber has access to has no bearing on the charge amount. Furthermore, since this is a location-based price, fuboTV customers can anticipate a $5 monthly increase or reduction in their subscription rate if they move to or from an area where the regional sports fee is in place.
