Baker Mayfield told reporters he got disrespected by scouts and would not elaborate, but it was reported that the Seahawks offered him a contract.
Baker Mayfield, the Heisman Trophy winner who was recently traded to the Cleveland Browns, has been in the news for a couple of reasons. One of those reasons is an absurd comment he made about his height. He stopped himself from expounding on that ridiculous comment and said that he might be joining the Seattle Seahawks next year.
Let me be clear right from the bat. Yes, the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner excelled at Oklahoma and racked up some impressive stats. His senior year, he threw for 4,327 yards and 43 touchdowns against just six interceptions. But I didn’t believe he’d make much of an impact in the NFL.
Although no one would label Mayfield a “great” quarterback or even a top-10 quarterback at this moment, he has been adequate throughout his four years in Cleveland. In his third season, he guided the Browns to an 11-5 record and a playoff win against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a squad that had gone 1-31 in the two seasons prior to his arrival.
That’s a significant achievement.
Okay, so Baker and the Browns didn’t have the best season in 2021, finishing with an 8-9 record and missing the playoffs. Mayfield, on the other hand, was sidelined for the most of the season. I’m not saying he’s the best quarterback in the league, but he’s a lot better than Case Keenum or Nick Mullens.
However, the Browns made it obvious to Mayfield after the season that he isn’t a better choice than Deshaun Watson, who Cleveland acquired about a month ago. The troublesome former Texans quarterback was then granted the NFL’s highest guaranteed deal ever.
As you would expect, this irritates Baker, who stays in “The Forest City” since the Browns have yet to move him, despite the fact that he seems to know where he’s headed. That was one of a few fascinating issues Mayfield highlighted on a recent podcast appearance.
In a moment that might have been far worse if he hadn’t controlled himself, he went off on his soon-to-be former franchise as well as his detractors. Baker also spoke about his future plans.

When asked whether he felt insulted by the Browns’ executive management during a recent interview on the Ya Neva Know podcast, Mayfield responded as follows:
“I feel belittled.” a hundred percent Because I was told one thing and they did something entirely different. That’s exactly what I’m doing right now.”

He went on to explain that in the last four years, he’s had “four different head coaches” and “a lot of different coordinators,” which is correct. And it’s understandable that Mayfield feels this way. He restored relevance to a team that had not won a playoff game since it was resurrected more than two decades earlier.
Overall, the Browns could have handled the situation a bit better. However, it seems that they assumed they were out of the competition for Watson until the unexpected announcement that he had been purchased. So it’s possible Cleveland didn’t have much time to inform Baker about what was going on.
And from purely a football standpoint — let me clarify that it’s only from a football standpoint, not an ethical one — Cleveland did the right thing here. Simply put, Deshaun Watson is a better quarterback than Baker Mayfield is a quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. is a quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. is a quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. and gives the Cleveland Browns a better chance to win football games. Period.
The NFL is a business, which is nothing new. That’s it. The Browns made a business choice.

A little over an hour into the broadcast, the conversation shifted to the “human aspect of sportsmen” and how “out of touch” sports fans can be, as the presenter put it. To put things in perspective, Mayfield was talking about how his injuries hampered what he could and couldn’t accomplish on the field.
When you’re wounded, you obviously can’t do as much and don’t perform as well. And it may lead to boos from the audience or condemnation from knucklehead sportswriters like me, right?
So Baker gives a statement about how fortunate he was to grow up where he did and get his degree, but he also mentions the “sad tales” of those who may not have much else outside of football. And here’s where it ended up:
“I’d love to show up at someone’s cubicle and just boo the s*** out of them and watch them collapse when people are so critical of it, like these men are — that’s the way they — I’d love to show up at somebody’s cubicle and just boo the s*** out of them and watch them crumble.”

Oh, if he’d proceeded down that road, things may have turned unpleasant. “I’m wrong for saying that,” Baker swiftly corrected himself. The presenter and producer continued talking for another 20 seconds or so, while Mayfield remained silent.
It can’t be enjoyable to be booed on live television by tens of thousands of people or to read unfavorable comments about your work performance. But as a professional athlete, you sign up for it. It’s much worse if you’re a quarterback in the NFL, probably the most scrutinized position in sports.
And, although the numbers aren’t even close, it’s like I signed up to have people tell me how much I stink when they disagree with one of my points of view. I’m sure this essay will elicit some of those kinds of responses. But there’s a distinction. In 2022, Mayfield is expected to earn $18.858 million.
Do you have any idea how much money I’ll be making in 2022? The amount is less than $18.858 million. But, Baker, I’ll tell you something. I’ll let you come to my house, pay a ridiculous amount to see me work, and boo me. I’ll even let you spend $15 on a beer from my refrigerator. And here’s another thing: when there’s noise, my job is more difficult than yours. Put up with it.
Mayfield is correct in that he was incorrect in expressing it. But it’s OK with us.
Baker has a hunch that the Seahawks will be his next NFL club, but he isn’t sure.
When Baker is asked where he thinks he’ll play next, he says: “If you’d asked me a week and a half ago, I’d have answered Indianapolis.” He goes on to add that Seattle is “probably the most probable possibility….” but that he has no clue. “I’m ready to move on to the next chapter.”

Here’s what Mayfield had to say about where he thinks he’ll be taking snaps next:
“If you’d asked me a week and a half ago, I’d have answered Indianapolis.” The most probable destination would be Seattle. But even then, I’m stumped.
“I’m all set to go on to the next chapter.”

The Seahawks seem to be the most logical landing location for Mayfield at this time. Pete Carroll has Drew Lock and Jacob Eason to pick from now that Russell Wilson has joined the Denver Broncos, and Baker is an improvement over both. Of course, moving Mayfield to the Pacific Northwest will be difficult due to his $18.8 million contract, which has reportedly been a sticking point in Cleveland’s trade talks.
So we’ll just have to wait and watch how this all goes down. Overall, I loved Mayfield’s participation since there were just a few things that he mentioned that I disagreed with. As I have said, I like the man and hope he finds a position where he can make a difference.
But we’re going to have a problem if I don’t see a Progressive ad with Baker moving.
