The Clemson Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes were both ranked in the top 10 of the AP Top 25 poll last week but have fallen out of this week’s rankings. Penn State, meanwhile, has jumped to No. 6 after winning its first game of the season against Akron on Thursday night.

After another weekend in which several rated teams struggled, Clemson and Ohio State fell out of the top 10 in The Associated Press college football poll, while Penn State rose four places to No. 6.

The reigning national champion Crimson Tide kept their grip on first place after beating Florida 31-29, the Crimson Tide’s narrowest margin of victory during their current 17-game winning run. The Crimson Tide won 59 of the 62 first-place votes.

Number two The other three first-place votes in the AP Top 25 went to Georgia, who had no trouble with South Carolina.
After a tight win against Nebraska, No. 3 Oregon moved up a place, while No. 4 Oklahoma dropped a spot.
For the second week in a row, Iowa was ranked No. 5, while Penn State is ranked No. 5 for the first time since November 3, 2019. Penn State defeated Auburn on Saturday night, giving the Nittany Lions their second win against a ranked opponent after defeating No. 18 Wisconsin.
Clemson and Ohio State both won on Saturday, but neither team seemed particularly dominating. The Tigers only scored 14 points against Georgia Tech, while the Buckeyes battled defensively until pulling away late against Tulsa, who were winless.
Clemson was previously rated this low in early 2015, when the Tigers were placed in the low teens at the start of the season but went on to win the national title.
Ohio State hasn’t been ranked lower than 11th since Week 2 of the 2014 season, when a defeat to Virginia Tech dropped the Buckeyes to No. 23. They were undefeated the rest of the season and won the national championship.
Clemson and Ohio State were both rated lower than No. 8 on Nov. 2, 2014, when Ohio State was 13th and Clemson was 19th.
Six rated teams lost on Saturday, but none of them were in the top 10, bringing the total number of ranked teams that have fallen through the first three weeks of the season to 19.
According to ESPN’s Stats & Information analysis, that’s the most in the poll’s history through three weeks of a season.
Ten ranked teams have lost to ranked teams, inflating the total. Only one top-10 team has fallen to an unranked opponent: North Carolina, who was ranked No. 10 entering the season before losing to Virginia Tech.
The first few weeks of the 2021 season have been tumultuous, but not as unexpected as they seem at first sight.
Through three regular-season surveys, a total of 35 clubs have been rated.
• Number 20 Michigan State is 3-0 in Year 2 under coach Mel Tucker, with an average margin of victory of 22 points. On Saturday, the Spartans defeated Miami 38-17 and are ranked for the first time since October 5, 2019.
• Number 22 Fresno State stunned UCLA with two late touchdown drives led by quarterback Jake Haener, making it the most exciting game of the weekend. For the first time since the final AP Top 25 of 2018, the Bulldogs are ranked.
After suffering its first defeat of the season, No. 24 UCLA fell 11 places.
• Number 25 After defeating Nevada 38-17, Kansas State is now 3-0. In 2020, the Wildcats were briefly rated before stumbling to a 4-5 finish.
• Virginia Tech was eliminated following a loss to West Virginia.
• After losing to BYU, Arizona State is out for the first time this season. After a second consecutive win against a ranked Pac-12 club, the Cougars moved up eight places to No. 15.
• Miami has been eliminated from the playoffs for the first time this season after dropping to 1-2.
