Amazon Games, the new game studio under Amazon’s umbrella, has hired a former Ubisoft Toronto boss to lead its Montreal studio.
Amazon Games has hired a former Ubisoft Toronto boss to lead its new Montreal studio.
Alexandre Parizeau has been appointed as the new head of Amazon Games’ new Montreal-based studio. If that name seems familiar, it’s because he and Maxime Béland co-founded Ubisoft Toronto. Béland, of course, was removed from office last year after a litany of accusations of abuse and violence were leveled against him. Parizeau, the studio’s managing director at the time, was never named in any of the allegations, and was apparently well-regarded for handling the studio’s response to the scandal after it became public, though as one of its leaders for more than a decade, he was also responsible for handling the studio before that. In any event, he stepped down from Ubisoft in February to “concentrate on personal matters.”
He adds, “I’m thrilled to announce that I’m joining the wonderful folks here at Amazon Games after spending some time with my family in Montreal.” The following is Amazon’s proposal.
“Alexandre Parizeau, the head of Amazon Games’ newly established development studio in Montreal, Canada, was revealed today. Alex has over 20 years of experience in the game business, most recently as the Managing Director of Ubisoft Toronto. Alex, who previously worked on Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six Vegas as a Senior Producer, will be in charge of the studio’s first project, a competitive multiplayer AAA game based on original IP. Alex will also work closely with the studio’s founders, who most recently worked as the core team behind the tactical shooter Rainbow Six Siege, to build a diverse and talented team in Montreal, developing games that offer bold new play experiences and foster community both inside and outside of the games.
For MMO enthusiasts, the press statement mentions New World and Lost Ark, as well as Smed’s game, about which we know very little, and “many” more “unannounced projects,” among other things.
“The Montreal studio will concentrate on developing unique AAA games, joining Amazon Games development teams in Seattle, Orange County, and San Diego. Amazon Games’ next domestically produced games include the open world MMO New World, which will be released on September 28, 2021, as well as other undisclosed projects in development, including an original game from the San Diego team, headed by industry veteran John Smedley. Amazon Games also publishes games created by other parties, such as Smilegate RPG’s Lost Ark, which will be released in early 2022.”
